Tech 1: How to service the Land Rover–Freelander Transmission
Make: Land Rover
Model: Freelander
Year: 1998 -
(This transmission is also found in Jaguar X Type, V/W, Mazda 6 & MPV)
Checking fluid level

  • Have the Vehicles Transmission warm, raised up in the air & idling in Park
  • Undo the 5mm allen key (check fluid level plug) located under the trans, and confirm that oil spills out
  • If trans fluid spills out, this means fluid is full
  • If there is no trace of fluid coming out of the hole, the trans is in need of topping up
Adding Fluid

  • To fill this transmission with fluid, you need to insert fluid through the tiny access hole located on top of the oil pan (facing the front of the vehicle)
  • The access hole is plugged up with a grommet which needs to simply be removed
Servicing the transmission

  • Undo the drain plug located on the bottom of the transmission and let drain
  • Follow procedures (adding fluid & checking fluid level as above)
  Beware use caution:
Do not attempt to undo the plug located on the side of the transmission as this will disengage the band assembly causing it to loose reverse and slippage in forward gears.

Checking Fluid level
    After adding sufficient transmission oil

  • Start up vehicle and go through the gears
  • If no sign of gears, you may need to add more trans fluid
  • Once transmission fluid is warm enough (40-50c)
  • Undo the check plug located under the transmission
  • Oil should trickle out. If not you will need to add fluid until the oil trickles out of plug
  • Insert the check plug, and fill plug
  • Test drive, then confirm oil level through check plug for final time
  • Add fluid if needed accordingly
